Former Sanborn Railroad Man Killed Thurs.

Council Bluffs, Ia. — Henry Mehren, 63, of Clarion, la., Great Western railroad brakeman, died in a hospital here Thursday night of injuries suffered in the Harlan, Ia., railroad yards earlier in the day.

According to reports from Harlan, Mehren was caught between two freight cars which he was helping "spot" in the yards. Mr. Mehrens began railroad work at Orange. City, Ia., at the age of 18, working for the Chicago, Minneapolis & St. Paul line. He was a conductor for 41 years, moving to Clarion in 1918. He was a member of the Order of Railroad Conductors. His wife and one daughter, Mrs. James Hutchison, of Clarion survive.

Henry Mehren, son of William and Maggie Mehren, was born in Orange City, Iowa, on August 12, 1879. He passed away at the Council Bluffs Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa, on April 7, 1943, at the age of 63 years, 6 months and 26 days. His father, mother, three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

At the age of 18 he began the work of railroading and he carried on in the occupation of his choice until the time of his death, 45 years later. On June 26, 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Ella Byer. To this union was born one daughter, Ruth June, now Mrs. James Hutchison, of Clarion. The family lived in Sanborn for many years, moving to Clarion, Ia. in 1918 and have lived there since that time.

He was a member of the Order of Railroad Conductors, enjoying greatly the fellowship with other members of his profession.

Funeral services were held at the Chapel in Clarion, Ia., at 10 a. m., April 11. Immediately following these services the family and intimate friends brought the body to Roseland Cemetery here, where services at the grave were conducted by Rev. R. J. Rutt. "The Old Rugged Cross," a favorite hymn of the deceased, was sung by Mrs. John Ondrcjka Jr. and Robert Wagner.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Ella, and daughter, Ruth June. The sympathy of his many friends was expressed by the beautiful floral offerings.

Pallbearers were Sam Omer, Henry Kissler, Robert Wagner, Walter Luke, Ernest Luke, Ed Love, Fred Soop and Al Guse.

Relatives and old friends of the Mehren family were guests at a dinner in the Fred Wagner home immediately following interment and then returned to Clarion.
