Ilene greatly believed in and was a generous contributor to the Iowa Specialty Hospital, Belmond. Memorials are suggested by her family to the Hospital Ladies’ Auxiliary, the Iowa Specialty Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice.

Ilene Rachel Tegland, the daughter of Otto and Rachel (Hefte) Tegland, was born December 27, 1927, in rural Clarion, IA. She attended Clarion area schools and Clarion High School from which she graduated. Following high school Ilene attended Waldorf College in Forest City, IA.

On November 27, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Kalkwarf at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. The couple’s union was blessed with a son and daughter, Earl and Rachel. Ilene and Bob farmed for many years and raised their children on farms in Belmond. Ilene was a wonderful cook, spending many hours preparing food for family and friends. She was also a great seamstress, sewing many of her children’s clothes. She loved her crafts, especially knitting, crochet, and hardanger. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Ilene made many beautiful one-of-a-kind quilts for all her kids and grandkids. She loved her Norwegian heritage. Ilene and Bob enjoyed playing cards and in later years traveling.

Ilene’s faith was very important and she was very active in the St. John Lutheran Church and the Women’s groups. She had been a longtime member of the Ladies’ Hospital Auxiliary and the Culture Study Club. She and Bob loved to play golf and the two had played in countless two-ball tournaments.

Over the years many will remember seeing her walking the trail every morning before coffee with her friends Doris and Karen. During her years at the assisted living and time at the Rehabilitation Center, she enjoyed the various activities there and her fellow residents and staff, and they mutually enjoyed having her in their lives.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son Earl and daughter-in-law, Julie; son-in-law Verlyn Boelman, all of Belmond, IA; grandchildren: Lane Boelman, Reed (Anna) Boelman, Jessica (Travis) Roma, Andy Kalkwarf-Barclay, Jennifer Gabrielson, and Dr. Dan Gabrielson; great-grandchildren Thomas, Joseph, Mackenzie, Cael, Carson, Cade, Preston, Kenedie, Bradan and Quinn; sisters-in-law Doris Dorr, Belmond, and Ruth Linn, Eagle Grove, IA.
