CLEAR LAKE – Esther Rosa Hale, 79, 0f 108 Glen Cove Drive, died Saturday (Dec. 31, 1994) at her home. Her body was cremated. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., is in charge of arrangements.
Esther Rosa Hale was born April 4, 1915 in Meservey, the daughter of Lee and Lizzie (Pals) Lewis. She moved to Clear Lake as a child and graduated from Clear Lake High School. She worked as a cook and waitress at Shady Beach for many years. On July 25, 1946, she married John Wallace Hale in Albert Lea, Minn. She and her husband moved frequently. They lived in Storm Lake and then moved to San Francisco, Calif., where she operated her own restaurant for several years. In later years, they lived in Indonesia, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Recently, she and her husband lived in retirement in Clear Lake and on their farm outside Northwood, spending their winters in Texas and California.
Esther enjoyed cooking, painting, taking art classes, and keeping up in correspondence with many friends she had made around the world. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary of Northwood and the Tina Rebecca Lodge of the I.O.O.F.
Survivors include one son, Michael Hale and his wife Michalene, Palo Alto, Calif.; one brother, Laverne “Butch” Lewis, Clear Lake; one sister, Ella Abrahamson, Glendale, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; Her husband John; two sisters, Josette VerHelst, and Gladys Vega; and one brother, Tom French.
