October 17, 1928 --- May 2, 2016

Deloris M. Harrenstein, of Luther Manor in Dubuque (formerly of Waverly, Iowa), passed away peacefully at 10:30 PM on Monday, May 2, 2016. She lived with Alzheimer's disease for over eight years. She was born on October 17, 1928, in Kanawha, Iowa; grew up there, and in 1946 while waitressing at her father's cafe, met a tall, blonde railroad man who stopped there for lunch. Many dances at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake followed, and on June 22, 1947, she married Alvin Harrenstein of Wellsburg, Iowa. They lived many years in Hampton, Iowa, where they raised two children. She worked as an at-home bookkeeper and later owned a women's dress shop in Hampton. After retirement they lived in Eagle Grove, Iowa; Lake Cornelia near Clarion, Iowa; spent many winters in Florida, and finally settled in Waverly, Iowa.

For many years Deloris used her creative talents and crafted a variety of unique items, sold them at craft fairs, and gave them as gifts. She was wonderful seamstress as well. In January of 2011 'Al and Dee' became roommates at Luther Manor in Dubuque, until Alvin's death on August 8, 2011. Deloris continued to live at Luther Manor, enjoying the music and dancing provided there. She became close to many of the staff. As the disease progressed, Deloris maintained her warmth, humor, and grace.

Surviving Deloris are a son, David A. Harrenstein, of Lanesboro, Minnesota; a daughter, Kathryn D. (Stephen) Struck of Dubuque; and her grandson, Benjamin D. Drury, of Iowa City, Iowa. Others who survive her are her brother-in-law Dennis Harrenstein of Ackley, Iowa; sisters-in-law Margery (and husband Tom) Teasdale of Grundy Center, Iowa; Lavonne Kruse of Omaha, Nebraska; Bernice Harrenstein of Wellsburg, Iowa; and Delores Kalvig of Billings, Montana; a close cousin Ilene Stockel of Dubuque, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and distant cousins scattered around the Midwest. Good friends also remain: Clarence and Irma Diekmann of Waverly, Iowa; Joy Thompson, also of Waverly; and Darlene Voeltz of Rochester, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Alvin Harrenstein; a grandson Jon C. Drury; her parents, Elmer and Elma (Asbe) Kalvig of Kanawha, Iowa, and her six siblings: Jerome (Delores) Kalvig, Naomi (Harry) Hamlin, 'Swede' (Iola) Kalvig, Alvin (Doris) Kalvig, Darrel (Janine) Kalvig, and Elaine (Merlin) Hegland.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, May 9, 2016, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Nancy Larson officiating. Grave side services will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, in Waverly, with lunch following at the church. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly is assisting the family. The family sends heartfelt thanks to the loving staff at Luther Manor, who made Mom's final years so enjoyable. Deloris was very comfortable living there and the staff became part of her family. Thank-yous also to Dr. Kirkendahl and Kate of Dubuque Internal Medicine; as well as Hospice of Dubuque, the staff of which served Mom so well twice during her stay at Luther Manor. Instead of or in addition to flowers, memorials may be given to Luther Manor in Dubuque (3131 Hillcrest Road), Iowa; or Hospice of Dubuque (1670 JFK Road).
