Jerald M. Torgerson, 81, of Mason City, died Thursday, April 21, 2016, at home. Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Inurnment will take place in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Memorials may be directed to the NIACC Foundation.
Jerry was born December 7, 1934, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Marshall and Mary Josephine (Melavin) Torgerson. He attended and graduated from Adel High School, the University of Northern Iowa and later went on to receive his master's degree from the University of Iowa.
Jerry married Jean Johnson September 3, 1960, in Northwood. He began his long career in education in Belmond, Iowa. In 1967, he and Jean moved to Mason City where he started working for Mason City Junior College. Jerry went on to hold a variety of Director roles in Student Services at North Iowa Area Community College, NIACC, until his retirement in 1996. Besides his family, some of his interests included golfing, fishing and supporting area high school and college athletics.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Jean, of Mason City; 3 children, Ann Ross of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Sarah (Steve) Cashman of Minnetonka, Minnesota, and Eric (Brittany) Torgerson of Apple Valley, Minnesota; 8 grandchildren, Sam and Ellie Ross, Blake, Austen, Claire and Lyla Cashman, Ava and Ben Torgerson; 1 great-grandchild, Savannah; brother-in-law, Hal (Dianne) Johnson of Northwood; 1 nephew, Jeff; and 2 nieces, Janan and Joleen.
