Delia Willet Cotton, was born June 15, 1879 in Rennselear, Ind. to William and Myra Cotton. In 1895 the family moved to Iowa and on Nov. 5, 1897 Delia Cotton and Harry Schoonover were married. To this union were born one son and three daughters, Harold, Loretta, Madeline and Aeline. The family has always lived in Eagle Grove and Harry Schoonover was a pioneer business man and civic leader. For many years he operated a grocery store on the "Old East Side" and later owned and operated a grocery store on Broadway. Following retirement from business he became mayor of the city and died in 1951 while in office. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1947.
In 1950 Mrs. Schoonover's aged mother was moved to the Schoonover home where she was bedfast and lovingly cared for by her daughter for two years. She died in July of 1952.
A woman of outgoing personality, Delia Schoonover was loved by everyone. The family was a close knit one and her home was a home to all her family, her brothers, sisters, and in the later years her grandchildren and great grandchildren. To be surrounded with her loved ones and making them happy was the greatest joy of her life.
Mrs. Schoonover's health began to fail in 1955 and her son-in=law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. MacNaughton moved to her home to care for her. Since that time she had been ill a great share of the time and spent considerable time in the hospital. She was admitted to the Clarion hospital May 14th of this year where she died about noon Friday, June 24th at the age of 81 years.
Mrs. Schoonover was a member of the First Congregational church, a long time member of the Order of Eastern Star, Sharon Shrine of the White Shrine and the Rebekah lodge.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Madeline Roscoe of Alden, Minn., Mrs. M. E. MacNaughton of Eagle Grove; four brothers, Fred Cotton of Eagle Grove; Chase Cotton of Vista, Calif.; Earl Cotton of Yucca Valley, Calif.; and Everett Cotton of Mitchell, S.D.; also 12 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Harold, one daughter, Mrs. Loretta Barnes, her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Schoonover, and Mrs. Bertha Grefe, and two brothers Oliver and William Cotton.
