Mrs. Howard Haywood Dies At Her Home
Mrs. Howard Haywood, 68, longtime Emmet County resident, died at her farm home here at 11 p.m. Saturday [September 9, 1961]. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Mrs. Haywood, the former Ola M. Blagg, was born Feb. 23, 1893, at Libertyville, the daughter of John and Kate Blagg. She moved with her parents to Emmet County in 1896, attended Country schools and graduated from Estherville High School. She attended the State University of Iowa and then taught school for two years at Goldfield and Superior.
She was married to Howard Akin Haywood on Dec. 31, 1919 [1920] at the home of her parents and the couple then moved to the present farm home southeast of Estherville where she continued to live following the death of her husband in March of this year. Mrs. Haywood was a member of the Methodist Church and the Methodist WSCS.
Survivors include one son, Howard Haywood Jr., Estherville; and two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Kathryn) Merrill, Long Prairie, Minn.; and Mrs. Robert (Rosemary) Hartman, Estherville. One brother, Walter Blagg, Estherville and eight grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Methodist Church, the Rev. William R. Nolan officiating. A family service will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home until 11 a.m. Tuesday at which time the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of services. The casket will not be open following the services. Burial will be in East Side Cemetery.
