KANAWHA — Robert "Red" K. Oxley, 79, of Kanawha, died Monday (Oct. 3, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Center in Mason City after a long illness. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Clarion. Inurnment will follow the luncheon at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Corwith with military rites by American Legion Post No. 229. The family will greet friends at 9:30 a.m., at the church, prior to the service.

Robert was born on Sunday, June 6, 1926, to Glen and Ruth (Gondon) Oxley in Corwith. He attended Corwith High School where he played first base on the 1943 State Championship Team. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre. He married Phyllis Hauptmann on Jan. 3, 1948, in Corwith. He farmed for many years. Robert received a certificate of 50 continuous years of membership from the American Legion in 2004. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing northern Minnesota. He enjoyed bowling and helped his team win the Iowa Bowling Tournament in 1968.

Robert is survived by his wife Phyllis (Hauptmann); two daughters, Sher Elkin of New York Mills, Minn., and Angela Oxley of Burt; and a son, Mark Oxley, of Iowa City. Also surviving are two brothers, Richard and Jerald Oxley; and three sisters: Glennis Green, Theresa Garry, and Mary Oxley. Two grandchildren, Jack Elkin and Kyp Oxley also survive Robert. He is preceded in death by a son, Mathew; a sister, Margaret; and his parents. The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.
