April 20, 1842 --- July 3, 1904

Mrs. Wm. Preston died, at her residence in Eagle Grove, Iowa, on Sunday, July 3, at 10:15 a.m. Mrs. Julia M. Preston, aged sixty-two years, three months and seven days. Julia M. Young was born in Sherbon, N. Y., April 20, 1842. While quite young she moved with her parents to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where her father secured a homestead eight miles northwest of the present city of Fort Dodge. On January 1, 1859 she was united in marriage to Wm. Preston and soon afterward moved to an adjoining farm, which her husband had secured. She was converted shortly after her marriage in 1850, and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. In the year 1867, Rev. Preston yielded to the call of God and the church to preach the Gospel, and accepted the appointment of the Presiding Elder as a supply pastor of Fort Dodge circuit, which included their home charge. This appointment he held for two years, when in the fall of 1869 he united with the Des Moines Conference, when Mr. and Mrs. Preston left the old homestead and entered the active itinerant life in which they continued until the fall of 1892, when they took the superannuated relation to the Conference, and moved to their present home at Eagle Grove, Iowa. Mrs. Preston has been afflicted for a number of years, but especially since the removal of a cancer some three years ago. She has passed thru a great deal of suffering. Realizing that life was very short for her she was thoroughly prepared for the messenger of death and rejoiced in the triumphs of the Gospel, as she sweetly passed away on Sunday the 3d inst. Six children, three boys and three girls, blessed the union of Mr. and Mrs. Preston. The three boys died young. Eugenia F., the oldest daughter, now the deceased wife of Rev. E. J. Helms, of Boston, died at her parents home in this city in 1900. Some two years afterward Rev. Helms married the second daughter, Grace L., leaving Rose A. now Mrs. Milo Dunham as the, only child living near their parents. To these two daughters and the mourning companions as well as to Mrs. E. R. Rising, of Des Moines, and Mrs. C. B. Winter, of our city, sisters of deceased, the sympathy of the community is extended. A large assembly gathered at the home on Tuesday the 5th inst., where the funeral services were held, conducted by Rev. H. L. Hastings, pastor of the M. E. church. Interment was made in the Rose Hill cemetery.
