July 26, 1920 ---- December 15, 1948

James C. Baker, 28, died at the hospital in Auburn, Indiana, Wednesday, December 15th while enroute to New York with a truck load of merchandise for Ellsworth Sales company. Funeral services were held at the Kastler funeral home on Sunday, December 19, with the Reverend James Slowey in charge. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery with the Clarence Shurtz post of the American Legion in charge of graveside services.

Baker had taken a truck bound for New York from Ellsworth's on Thursday, December 9th. He had not been well for some time previous to his trip but reported for this load and started out. He had tractor trouble in Dewitt and so was delayed on the trip. He called Ellsworth's from Waterloo, Indiana, stating he was sick and unable to continue. They dispatched a man from their Chicago branch to pick up the truck and Baker was to return to Eagle Grove on a west bound truck.

The next word received was from a doctor at the hospital in Auburn, Indiana, near Waterloo calling Mrs. Baker. They told her that her husband was seriously ill and to come at once. She left that night with her brother Charles Ingalls arriving in Auburn Wednesday afternoon a few hours after Mr. Baker had died. Death occurred a t 11 a. m. Wednesday.

Baker had been treated for malaria which he contracted in the service and for stomach ailments. Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscles) was given as the cause of death. Persons from out of town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Luthi of Melbourne, Earl Bachel of Marshalltown, Ed Baker of Badger, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Willard of Ankeny, C. A. Brown of Fort Dodge, M. Doolittle of Webster City, Mr. and Mrs. J. Goudy and Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Kreiger of Blairsburg.
