Clarence Randall Porter, 88, of West Des Moines died of a heart ailment Thursday, March 11, 1999, at Hospice Kavanagh House on Grand in West Des Moines. Funeral service was March 15 at Westover Funeral Home and burial was in Galt Cemetery in Galt. Memorial contributions may be made to Kavanagh House on Grand. Mr. Porter was born Sept. 7, 1910, in Egbert, Wyo., the son of William Edgar and Hetha Rock Randall Porter. He married Mildred Marie Scheppler of Woolstock June 20, 1936. Mr Porter moved with his parents and family to Scotia, Calif., in 1911, to Batavia in 1914, then to Ottumwa in 1919. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1928. He passed a Civil Service Test in 1929 and started work at the General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C. He transferred to the V.A. Hospital in Knoxville in 1931. In 1943, he, his wife and children moved to Des Moines where he worked in the V.A. Hospital. He was drafted into the Navy for two years in the South Pacific. When he was discharged, he returned to work in several government offices in Des Moines until he retired from Federal Housing Administration. He had worked 42 years in the federal government civil services.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sandra Porter Leonard of Mitchellville and Karen Porter Betz of Grimes; one son, Steven Randall Porter of Fairfield; four grandchildren; two great-grandchilden;one sister, Helen Porter Simpson of Des Moines; many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Willie Elmer Porter, Mae Porter Garrett, Clara Florence Porter, Anna Hope Porter Santry, Frank Lee Porter, Mary Elizabeth Porter, James Albert Porter and Fred Emmett Porter.
