January 23, 1937 --- February 18, 2016

Daniel Raymond Wanken, 79, died Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital [Fayetteville, NC]. Daniel was born January 23, 1937 in Clarion, Iowa, to the late Peter and Gladys Smith Wanken. In addition to his parents Daniel was predeceased by six sisters. Daniel served in the 82nd , 101st and 11th Airborne Division and 1st and 5th Special Forces of the US Army and retired after 20 years as a Master Sergeant. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over thirty years. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 23, 2016 from 7 to 9 pm at Reeves Funeral Home. A Wake Service will be conducted at 7:15 pm by Father Gaul and a Rosary will be given by the Knights of Columbus at 8:00 pm.

Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Gae L. Wanken; son, Jeffery Wanken; daughter, Deanna Ham; adopted daughters, Joanne Van Horne and Caryn Beecher; brother, Eugene Wanken; twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Celebrating 50 years

Daniel Raymond Wanken and Gae Barlow Wanken of Fayetteville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by going out to eat with their daughter Deanna and her husband Brett. Mr. and Mrs. Wanken were married on July 7, 1959, in Jackson, Minn. Their son Jeffrey lives in Pennsylvania. Their daughter Deanna and her husband Brett Ham live in Wilmington. They also have two adopted daughters, Joanne and Caryn. The couple has 12 grandchildren. Mrs. Wanken is a housewife. Mr. Wanken retired from the Army and also worked at the Holiday Inn Bordeaux.
