SWEA CITY - Lucile A. Swanson, age 100, passed away Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016, at Hawkeye Care Center in Bancroft, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, at First United Methodist Church in Swea City, Iowa, with Pastor Greg Jorgensen officiating. Interment will be in Harrison Township Cemetery, rural Swea City. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at First United Methodist Church in Swea City.
Lucile A. Swanson was born Sept. 16, 1915, on the family farm north of Swea City, Iowa, to Edward C. and E. Claire (Fults) Peterson. She graduated from Swea City High School in 1932 and attended the University of Minnesota. After the death of her mother, she returned to the farm and cared for her father. On Jan. 20, 1939, she married Dean O. Swanson at the Methodist Church in Clarion, Iowa. Dean and Lucile farmed in East Chain, Minn., before relocating to the family farm in Swea City and, in 2010, she became a resident of the Main Street Manor in Swea City. Lucile loved farm life, working in the fields and raising livestock. She was featured in the newspaper and on television driving the latest model of an Allis Chalmers tractor. Her greatest passion was raising poultry, capons, geese and laying hens. She worked for Welp's Hatchery in Bancroft and after moving from the farm was employed by the state of Iowa as a Home-Health Care Provider. She enjoyed working with many clients in Kossuth County and earned an associate's degree in healthcare from Northern Iowa Area Community College (NIACC).
Lucille was baptized in the United Methodist Church in Swea City and was a lifetime member. As a member of the United Methodist Church she served in many leadership roles. These included offices in the United Methodist Women's Society, Sunday School teacher, soloist, choir director, choir member and Executive board member. Lucile still enjoyed being a member of her church circle. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star holding all offices, serving as a hostess as well as being a representative to Grand Chapter meeting within Iowa.
Hobbies included singing, cooking, playing cards (500), quilting, crocheting, embroidering, reading and traveling to many states and foreign countries. Her precious treasures were her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A dream of Dean and Lucile's was that their children earn college degrees. All of their children and most grandchildren have made that dream a realization. She was always there for her family giving great hugs and kisses along with sharing tears of joy and sadness. Her grandchildren loved bringing friends to their Grandma Swanee's house for her delicious cooking. Her homemade noodles were a family favorite and we think the noodles would win a grand champion ribbon at any state fair. In her later years, she enjoyed spending winters with her daughter Robyn in Bowling Green, Ky., and made many new Kentucky friends.
Left to cherish her legacy are Dee Ann (Jim) Bierstedt of Fenton, Iowa, Dr. Robyn Swanson of Bowling Green, and Mary Jo (Bill) Lofstrom of Lakota, Iowa; grandchildren, Jim (Judy) Jensen of Indianola, Iowa, Jodi (Clay) Jorgenson of Lucas, Iowa, Jana (Brian) Bailey of Knoxville, Iowa, Jason (Misty) Jensen of Milo, Iowa, Steven (Tricia) Lofstrom of Armstrong, Iowa, Jeff (Heather) Jensen of Ruthven, Iowa and Stacy (Wade) Mueller of Lakota; 14 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Cecilia Swanson of Hugo, Minn.; numerous nieces, nephews, friends, the loving staffs of Main Street Manor and Hawkeye Care Center, and her special poodle, Puffers. Preceding her in death were her husband, Dean; parents, E. Claire and Edward C. Peterson; son-in-law, Duane Jensen; two sisters and their husbands, Vivian (Ormand) Otterson, Maxine (Roy) Valvick; one brother and his wife, Leonard (Pearl) Peterson; and several in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
