MARSHFIELD, Wis. -- Leman Arthur "Lee" Petrie, 75, of Marshfield, Wis., passed away at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at St. Joseph's Palliative Care Unit after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Leman was born on Feb. 2, 1924, in Popejoy, Iowa, to Hulda Pepper and Maynard Petrie. Leman attended schools in Hampton, Iowa until 1940, when his family moved to Ojibwa, Wis. He graduated from Winter, Wisconsin, High School in 1941. After graduation, he moved to Superior, Wis., and worked for the rail road until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in February of 1943. Lee then served as sergeant of Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 345th Infantry Division in the European Theatre. While home on leave, he married his high school sweetheart, Julia "Leona" Burger on June 12, 1943, at Trinity Lutheran Church parsonage in Hayward, Wis. In November of 1945, Lee was discharged from the Army at San Francisco, Calif. He and Leona then moved to the Superior area, where he again worked for the railroad. In 1947, they moved to the Marshfield area and bought a farm in Bakerville. He also was employed at Hub City Foods, Mfld., until his retirement in 1986 after 31 years. He continued farming along with working at Fleet Farm in Marsh field, until his illness in 1998. Lee enjoyed traveling with his family, reading, playing cards, working in his machine shop, spending time with his Army pals yearly, and most of all, being close to Leona.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Julia Leona; four children, James (Sue) Petrie of La Crosse, Barbara (Gary) Dengel of Marshfield, Beverly Southards of Wisconsin Rapids and Rodney (Patti) Petrie of Onalaska; eight grandchildren, Scott, Bob, Jeff, Kim, Austin, Brianna, Stacey and Michelle; eight stepgrand children, Jim, Jeff, Dalton, Troy, Angela, Jesse, Kristy and Andrew; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Cody, Shelby and Kasey; five stepgreat-grandchildren, Jenna, Jerrica, Jaclyn, Alex and Austin; one brother, Lyle (Jeanette) Petrie of Ojibwa; a special Aunt, Vivian; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by three sisters, one brother and his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Zion United Methodist Church, Marshfield. Jean Roehrborn will be the organist for William A. Allen as soloist. Burial will be in Brooklawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, town of Richfield, Wood County, where military rites will be held by the American Legion Post #54, Marshfield. The Rev. Kerry J. Wilson officiate. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church from 10 a.m. Monday until service time. Rembs/Kundinger Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
