Charlie Wilson, age 90, of Belmond passed away Wednesday January 20, 2016 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Memorial services for Charlie Wilson will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday January 23, 2016 at United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond. Pastor Donna Buckman will officiate. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be provided by the Belmond Honor Guard. Visitation for Charlie Wilson will be held one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
Charles Robert Wilson, the son of Charles H. and Gladys I. DeMoss Wilson, was born December 17, 1925 near Iowa Falls. Charlie grew up in Blairsburg, graduating from Blairsburg High School. Charlie was drafted for WWII, serving in Japan. He then returned home and within a short time was once again drafted for service in the Korean War. He attended art school, graduating from the Washington School Art. Charlie was united in marriage to Leona E. Jenkins, and the couple was blessed with two children, Elizabeth and William. Leona passed away in 1976.
Throughout his life, Charlie enjoyed working in many different roles. As an adolescent, he began working with bees, and produced and sold his own honey as part of Wilson Apiaries. Charlie worked as a cook on the Illinois Center railroad. Charlie also loved baseball, American history, and classical music. He was very active with the Boy Scouts, serving as a Scout Master for several years. He received much recognition and several awards from the Boy Scouts of America. Most notable, he was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.
Charlie is survived by two children, William, living in Plymouth, IA, and Elizabeth (Moxley) of Wheaton, IL; two grandchildren, Morgan living in Wheaton, IL, and Taylor of Fort Collins, CO; a sister, Iris Greenfield of Slater, three brothers, Francis of Perry, IA, Gerry and wife, Sue of LeSueur, MN, Jon (Reggie) of Kansas City, MO; eleven nieces and thirteen nephews as well as a host of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Leona, and a sister, Elizabeth.
