Donald LaVerne Hunter, Jr. was born July 9, 1934, in Klemme, Iowa, the son of Donald and Martha Hunter, Sr. He died at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, Monday, December 28, 2015 at the age of eighty-one years, five months and nineteen days.

Don completed his education in the Charter Oak Community School, graduating with the class of 1953. His farming career began at the age of 15 after the death of his father. He farmed for fifty-one years in partnership with his brother Dean. On December 27, 1961 Don was united in marriage to Beverly Blessing in Shambaugh, Iowa. The couple settled on the family farm in rural Charter Oak and were blessed with three children. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. Don was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak. His word was stronger than any written contract, and he lived up to all his commitments. He enlisted in the Army National Guard and served his country on active duty for fifteen months.

In his leisure time, he like to fish, especially for carp. After retiring in 2000, he and Bev enjoyed camping, often with Loren and Julie. He enjoyed working with wood and making small projects. One of his favorite activities was restoring discarded and broken items and the challenge of turning them into something different and useful.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Doloris, and two siblings in infancy, Gail and Darlene. Survivors include his wife, Beverly of fifty-four years; children Kimberly and her husband, Scott; Linda and her husband, Todd; and Todd and his wife, Brenda; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one brother Dean and his wife, Gloria; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral Services were held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, January 2, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Gary Fridley officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Charter Oak Cemetery in Charter Oak. Organist Marjorie Neddermeyer provided accompaniment for congregational hymns," Simple Gifts" and "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee." A recording of "Born Country" by Alabama was also played. Serving as pallbearers were: Kevin Hunter, Brock Hunter, Todd Hunter, Scott Walters, Tom Staley and Todd Naab. The family invited everyone to return to the Charter Oak Community Building for fellowship and lunch provided by the United Methodist Women and Staley’s. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
