KILLED BY AN INFURIATED ANIMAL
Benedict Hockel Killed In A Pasture In Lake Township- Leaves a Large Family.
Special to the Republican
Hardy, Iowa, May 31, 1898; Benedict Hockel, an elderly gentleman living on a farm in Lake township was gored by a bull, Sunday morning. Mr. Hockel had gone to the pasture to bring up the cattle. This bull had been ugly for some time, and Mr. Hockel had been in the habit of taking him by the ring in the nose in order to control him. Just as Mr. H. stepped up to the bull, the animal sprang forward, knocked him down, trampled on and gored him until life was extinct. An examination showed that Mr. H. had twelve ribs crushed, his breast bone was broken, his collar bone fractured, and he was frightfully gored. Help came as soon as possible, and drove the infuriated beast off. Mr. Hockel was a man of fine qualities, and a good neighbor. He has a family of twelve children, who with the wife mourn his loss. His remains will be interred Wednesday.
