Clifford Doyle (Butch) Thorn was born on June 27, 1945 at Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Clifford and Shirley Livasy Thorn. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1964 and served in the U. S. Army from 1968 to 1971 with service in Korea. Clifford moved to California where he worked as a shoe salesman for three years, lived in Las Vegas, Nev., for two years and returned to Eagle Grove in 1973. He was united in marriage to Marsha Mooney Mayberry on May 29, 1986 at Vinton, Iowa.

He was employed by Erickson Mfg. Co., Holmes, Iowa; managed Pester Derby station in Eagle Grove; was a carpenter with Jacobson Construction, Eagle Grove; managed a restaurant in Clarion, Iowa; and worked for Umthun Trucking Co., Eagle Grove before moving to Texas to make his home, where he was a self-employed trucker.

He died at the Veterans Hospital, Houston, Texas, on June 15, 1987 at the age of 41 years, 11 months and 18 days. He is survived by his parents, Clifford and Shirley Thorn, Eagle Grove; grandparents, Walter and Clara Thorn, Eagle Grove; sons, Tim, Houston, Texas; Aaron and Travis, Kennewick, Wash.; and brothers, Thomas, Eagle Grove; and Ronald of Houston, Texas.

Funeral services were held at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Rev. David Miller, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Eagle Grove, officiated at the 2 p.m. service on June 18 and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
