October 7, 1910 --- June 24, 1995

Paul R. Grier of Newton died June 24 at Skiff Medical Center, Newton. He was 84 years old, and a native of Deep River. Services will be held July 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. (There is no visitation as the remains were donated to the University of Iowa Hospitals.)

Paul R. Grier was born Oct. 7, 1910 on a farm near Deep River, the son of Mark and Sarah Bowden Grier. He was a graduate of Guernsey High School and Iowa State Teachers College of Cedar Falls, where he was an outstanding athlete on the track team. Mr. Grier taught school at Guernsey, Brooklyn, Remsen and Eagle Grove, and was principal at the latter two schools. He started at the Maytag Company July 1, 1943 and was employed there 29-1/2 years as manager of the product order department, retiring in 1972.

He was married to Eleanor Louise Yerkes Dec. 31, 1936 at Tama. Mr. Grier is survived by his wife; a son, Bruce Grier of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Diane Richard of Newton and Mrs. Daryl (Julie) Shook of Greene; three brothers, Dale Grier of Montezuma and Laverne Grier of Pella. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Louise Phelps and Zelma Provin.

During retirement, Mr. Grier worked John Thomas CPA for 11 years on a part-time basis. He was also a member of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) at Des Moines, and was active in RSVP in Newton. Services are being arranged by Wallace-Pence Funeral Home, Newton.
