Richard K. Nelson was born on January 19, 1927, in rural Renwick, Iowa to Albert and Mary Emma (Nelson) Nelson. He received his education in Renwick, graduating in 1944 from Vernon Consolidated Country School. Richard was inducted into the United States Army on April 10, 1945 at Fort Snelling, MN. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant on October 20, 1946. His decorations include the Army Occupation of Germany Ribbon, Victory Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal. In the fall of 1946 thru 1947, Richard went on to electrical school in Chicago, IL.

Richard was united in marriage to Irene Clare Nelson on June 28, 1947, at Mabel, MN. The couple lived for four years in Webster City, IA and in Winona, MN, where Richard worked doing electrical rewind for motors in electrical shops. They started farming in the Corwith and Eagle Grove, Iowa areas and then settled on a farm North of Renwick in 1958, where they farmed for 29 years. Richard and Irene retired in 1989 and moved into Humboldt.

Richard was a member of the United Methodist Church of Renwick, the American Legion Post #0289 Harvey McPeak Post, and was a 50 year member of the Isaak Walton League. Richard enjoyed fishing, duck hunting and golfing. He also enjoyed his winter trips to Arizona, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Richard Kent Nelson, 88, of Humboldt, formerly of Renwick, died, Friday, October 2, 2015, at Humboldt Care Center North, Humboldt, Iowa. Richard is survived by his sons, Richard Nelson of Montezuma, IA and Jay (Kathy) Nelson of Renwick, IA; grandchildren, Staci (Matt) McCaustland, Dr. Holli (Bob) Nelson-Bruce; great-grandchildren, Erik "EJ" and Mason McCaustland; sister, Gladys Giesel and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene Nelson; son, Ross Nelson; brothers, Shelby and Robert Nelson; sisters-in-law, Helen and Grace Nelson and brother-in-law, Willard Giesel.
