March 31, 1883 -- November 6, 1954

Mrs. Frank M. Kaspar, 71, of Sioux City, who died Saturday afternoon in a Sioux City Hospital from injuries suffered earlier in the day when she fell from an automobile on Gordon Drive, was an early Hawarden resident.

Mrs. Kaspar, the former Ethel Granger, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Granger and was the last member of a family of 13 children. Mr. Granger was Hawarden’s first mayor. Dr. Thomas L. Coriden, Woodbury county coroner, said Mrs. Kaspar died of a crushed chest. Mrs. Kaspar was riding with her husband. Mr. Kaspar was backing the car from near the river bank to the Gordon Drive when he lost control of the vehicle and Mrs. Kaspar fell from the front seat. As the car spun around the wheels passed over her. A six year-old neighbor of the Kaspars, Daniel Thalles, was riding in the rear seat of the car. The couple had been fishing along the river just prior to the accident, according to officers.

Ethel Granger was born March 31, 1883, at Colo, Iowa. She came to Hawarden as a child and had lived in Sioux City 55 years. She was married to Mr. Kaspar May 26, 1903 at Eagle Grove. Mr. and Mrs. Kaspar celebrated their golden anniversary in May, 1953. She was a member of the Isis Chapter 173, Order of Eastern Star and the Sunshine League in Sioux City. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon with Reverend Willard Cunningham of Whitefield Methodist Church officiating.
