Donald D. Barnes, 62, of Clear Lake died Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, at the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond. A memorial service honoring Don will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church in Mason City. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Don's family suggests memorials be directed to the Donald Barnes Memorial Fund.
Donald Dean Barnes was born on July 7, 1953, to Loyal and Alice (Grimmius) Barnes in Grundy Center. He graduated from Denver (Iowa) High School in 1971 before attending Wartburg College and Northwestern University, where he obtained his certificate in physical therapy. Don was dedicated to his career and helping others through physical therapy. He married Kristi Bruns on July 6, 1974. They later divorced. He married Penny Ellsworth on June 30, 1989, in Ventura.
Don loved photography, attending his children's events, and being in nature. Don was passionate about his various hobbies over the years, which included woodworking, archery, golf, boating, fishing, hunting and even biking, though family was the most important thing in his life. Don and Penny loved to travel, and visited Ireland three times in the last of couple years. No matter where he went, Don had his camera with him. He was a member of Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church in Mason City, the Promise Keepers Bible Study group, the Professional Photographers of Iowa, the APTA, the IPTA, and he was the president of the North Iowa Photography Club.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Penny Barnes, Clear Lake; his parents, Loyal and Alice Barnes, Mason City; his children, Kimberly (Tim) Egli, Wayland, Jami (Ben) Sonney-Milne, Des Moines, Aaron (Emily) Barnes, St. Paul, Minnesota, Brandi (Ryan) Sonney-Evers, Mason City, Josh (Laura) Sonney, Hermitage, Pennsylvania, and John Barnes, Fridley, Minnesota; grandchildren, Ty, Tanner and Taelyn Egli, Finnian Graves and Margaux Milne, Lucia and Oliver Barnes, Fletcher and Ensley Evers, Ava Sonney, and Cason Connelly; his brother, Randy (Sue) Barnes, Hudsonville, Michigan; and his dogs, Jasper and Beau Jangles; as well as many extended family and friends. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.
