Joan Caroline Schwieger was born on March 12, 1931, in rural Burt, daughter of Russell and Edna (Andreasen) Shipler. She grew up in Portland Township and attended country school # 7 till it closed in when she was in 7th grade. Joan graduated from Burt High School in 1948. Joan worked in Fort Dodge at Chef’s Café and Globe Union for several years. She married Donald Way of Goldfield. They lived in California and the Titonka, Iowa area until his death. Joan then worked at Weidenhoff (now Snap-On Tools) for seven years in Algona. In May 19, 1962 Joan was married to Paul Schwieger at the Methodist Church in Algona. They lived on a farm in the Burt area when in 1970 Joan, Paul and son Steve moved to Long Prairie Minnesota where they milked cows and farmed. Due to injuries from a car accident Joan was unable to help on the farm. They moved back to the Iowa area in 1987 and settled in Swea City. After her divorce in 2000, Joan continued to live in the home until her death.

Joan joined St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt where she was baptized and confirmed on March 21, 1964. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Swea City, Iowa. She loved working in her garden with her flowers, taking care of her family and had a small gift shop in her home with many of her homemade crocheted doilies and afghans. Joan lived in her home until April 2015 when she entered the Valley Vue Nursing Home in Armstrong due to health concerns. Joan passed away August 6, 2015, at the age of 84.

Survivors include her son, Steve and his wife Terri Schwieger of St. Cloud, Minnesota and one grandson Jason and his wife Tiffany of Sartell, Minnesota, 2 granddaughters Bailee & Miyaa, 2 sisters, Lavonne Eimers of Mountain Home Arkansas, Darlene Davis of Valley Vue Nursing Home, Armstrong and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandson Timothy Schwieger (2012), mother Edna (1940), father Russell (1973), step-mother Sophia Shipler Bradley (2013), younger sister Carol (Shipler) and husband Donald Zwiefel (1955) and several nieces and nephews.
