Center Point, IA -- Ruth Elizabeth Wiley, 98, of Madrid, Iowa, formerly of Center Point, passed from this life on Monday, July 27, 2015, at the Madrid Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 31, in the Sanborn Memorial Chapel at the Madrid Home, 613 W. North St., Madrid, where the family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until the service time Friday. Interment will take place at 3 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls.
Ruth was born on Sept. 28, 1916, in Renwick, Iowa, one of five children to Albert William and Louisa Ernestina (Schnittker) Schlesselman. She was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College, in Ames, earning her bachelor's degree in teaching. Ruth taught school before her marriage. In August 1942, Ruth married Harold Erwin Wiley in Cedar Falls, They made their home on a farm near Center Point. In addition to raising their children, she helped on the farm. Ruth was a member of the United Methodist Church in Center Point, where she was active before moving to Madrid in 1995. Ruth enjoyed cooking, crocheting and spending time outdoors including, gardening, fishing, canoeing and swimming. After all their children left home, Harold built a farm pond on the farm for Ruth and together they enjoyed countless hours swimming and fishing. Ruth loved spending time with all the family. In her earlier days, she taught many of her grandchildren how to canoe. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her children, Dale A. (Pat) Wiley of Chariton, Myron H. (Mary Susan) Wiley of Centreville, Ala., Darrell M. (Debbie) Wiley of Knoxville, Grant M. (Anne) Wiley of Glenwood, Linn R. (Barb) of Shellsburg and Marcia Wiley of Ames; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and many loving and caring nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded into eternal life by her parents; husband in 2000, Harold E. Wiley; two brothers, Orvis and Paul Schlesselman; and two sisters, Dorothy Wiley and Naomi Getty.
In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made in Ruth Wiley's memory to The Madrid Home ACTS Fund. The Iles Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid is assisting the family with arrangements.
