Funeral of Henry Foster Here Saturday
Sudden Death of one of City's Business Men shocks and saddens community
Funeral services for Henry E. Foster, 50, were held in the Methodist church Saturday, Feb. 14. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery, Goldfield. Rev. Harrison Dawes officiated. Henry Foster suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding in the area, where the spinal column enters the brain) on Tuesday night, February 3. He was taken to the Lutheran hospital in Fort Dodge the next day and he died there on Wednesday night, February 11 about 11:30. His wife and son James were with him at the time.
Physicians describe the condition as a weak blood vessel with which some persons are born. There is no known way of foreseeing the condition and little that can be done in case bleeding does start.
Moved Here In 1945
Mr. and Mrs. Foster and their son James moved to Eagle Grove in 1945 and purchased the Food Store which they operated from Harry Schoonover. They have resided here since and in that time, Mr. Foster became an important individual in the civic life of this community. He was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of directors of that group for several years. He was representing the food firms on the board again this year. He was also a member of the Rotary club and had served as its secretary for several years. He also belonged to the Masonic order and was active in lodge work. He was a member of the Methodist church and important in the councils of that organization.
Successful Business Man
In addition to all of this community activity he put in the traditionally long hours that are necessary to operate a successful food store. Henry was highly respected and much loved by his business competitors and fellow merchants. The esteem in which people held him was best demonstrated by the large crowd that attended his funeral on a Saturday afternoon.Henry Edward Foster was born January 11, 1903 in Downing, Mo. He spent most of his boyhood in Humeston, Iowa, however, graduating from the high school there. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Iowa State Teachers College and also met his wife there. He received his Masters degree from the State University of Iowa and also took graduate work attending Iowa State College. Following his graduation from college he served for two years as Superintendent of Schools at Viola township.
From there he went to Vernon Township school near Renwick and served as superintendent there for six years. From Renwick he went to Nora Springs where he was superintendent for 10 years. Because of his health he was advised to leave the school administration business and at this time he and Mrs. Foster purchased the food market here. During his teaching years he was extremely active in Boy Scout work for which he received national recognition. Boy Scout headquarters heard of his death recently and wrote Mrs. Foster a letter of sympathy.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Foster of Humeston, his wife, son James, who is a junior student in Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State College and two sisters. One sister preceded him in death last November. His own death came on his fiftieth birthday.
