Arlys (Mrs. Gerald) Middents, 54, of Sherman, Texas, formerly of the Kamrar area, died Friday, May 20 at the Medical Plaza Hospital in Sherman. She had been a patient for three months. Services will be held Thursday, May 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Kamrar with Rev. Ken Ribe officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery. Friends may call at the Foster Funeral home after 1 p.m. Wednesday until 9:30 a.m. Thursday. A memorial service was held Monday, May 23 in Sherman, Texas.
Arlys Dee Havinga, daughter of Marvin and Lena Olthoff Havinga, was born July 20, 1933 at Kamrar. She was reared and educated at Kamrar. She was a member of the 1948 Kamrar girls basketball team which won the state championships. She was the captain of the team in 1950 when they were runners-up at the state championships. She received an associate of arts degree from Buena Vista College and earned a bachelors degree in history and Christian education from the University of Dubuque. She taught at Belmond and Sioux Rapids. On August 21, 1955, she married Gerald J. Middents. The couple lived in Albuquerque, N.M. while Mr. Middents was stationed in the Air Force. She continued to teach. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1957 where they resided for one year. The couple also resided in Dubuque and Minnetonka, Minn., before moving to Sherman in 1967 where she worked as a teacher. Mrs. Middents was the founder and a charter member of Sherman, Texas League of Women Voters, and was awarded the organization's citizenship award in 1983. She was a member and ruling elder of the Grand Avenue Presbyterian Church in Sherman and the Austin College Campus Club.
Survivors are her husband; a son and daughter, Gregory, and Susan (Mrs. Billy) Vincent, both of Sherman; a grandchild, Kari Beth Vincent; her mother of Webster City, and a sister Lila Havinga of Webster City. She was preceded in death by her father.
