Forrest R. Dawson, 83, of Waverly, formerly of Oelwein and Boone, died Monday, June 12, 2006, in Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly after suffering a stroke. A time of sharing was held Tuesday at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein. A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 14, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Janesville with the Rev. Keith Tomlinson officiating. Interment was followed in Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman. A memorial fund has been established.

He was born Sept. 21, 1922, at Mayerthorpe, Alberta, Canada, the son of Raymond and Mabel Shirey Dawson. He graduated from East High School in Des Moines and Central College in Pella. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Chief Lt. (j.g.) on the USS Nelson. Following military service he attended Drake University in Des Moines where he studied for a master's degree in mathematics and science. He was united in marriage with Betty Mae Paul on Dec. 16, 1945, on the Paul farm near Laurel, then taught mathematics and science in Clarion for several years. He later worked in the office as an engineer for the Chicago Great Western Railroad in Oelwein, the Rock Island Railroad in Ankeny and the Northwestern Railroad in Boone. He enjoyed dancing and his garden. He loved his grandchildren and especially loved his great grandchildren.

He is survived by two daughters, Gale (Dan) Hennager of Waverly and Joan (Dan) Jones of Grinnell; one son Paul (Joyce) Dawson of Elgin, Ill.; five grandchildren, Dr. Krista (Pete) Kayser of Lone Tree, Dr. D.J. (J.J.) Hennager of Iowa City, Holly (Justin) Little of Waverly, Matt (Amanda) Jones of Lynnville and Angie (Dave) Richards of Newton; nine great grandchildren, Gaby, Kenna and Evan Kayser, Ella and Celi Hennager, Jackson and Sidney Little, Bryce Richards and Morgan Jones; one sister Joy Kale of St. Augustine, Fla., and one brother, Leo (Martha) Dawson of Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Betty on March 5, 2003.
