Richard “Dick” Rammer Goeman, 80, formerly of Belmond, died July 13, 2015 at his home in Oro Valley, AZ after a long journey with cancer. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 8 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Reformed Church, with internment to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Immanuel Reformed or a charity of your choice
Dick was born June 2, 1935 to Rammer and Jennie Goeman in Belmond. He grew up on his family farm and at the age of 15 took over farming responsibilities following the death of his father. In high school he was active in band and FFA graduating from Belmond High School in 1953. He auditioned on the trombone with Tommy Dorsey, but decided he didn’t want that lifestyle. When in his 20’s he earned the American FFA Degree, which is granted to less than one percent of 600,000 FFA members.
Dick married his high school sweetheart Donna Lee in 1955. They were the parents of Debra, Linda, Ellen and Richard, Jr. In the early 1960’s Dick left farming and went to business school to learn data processing in the beginning days of information technology. He began work at Iowa State University, and went on to design software for numerous companies including Jostens, G.T. Schjeldahl, Olmsted County MN, Northrup King, Henkel and held consulting jobs with others. For over 30 years he and his family resided in Wayzata, MN. Donna died in 1993.
In 1995 Dick married Carol Leinbach Drenckpohl who grew up a quarter mile from his home farm. His family expanded by three more children: Phil, Mike and Doug and their families. After their marriage they resided in Midland, MI for five years before moving to Oro Valley. Dick had many interests and hobbies. Farming remained an important part of his life as he managed the family farms. He kept up to date with the latest farm journals plus phone calls to check on the crops.
Dick was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman. Tales are many of some of the happenings at the ‘bus’ and the ‘deer shack”. He became a Wildcat fan in Arizona and enjoyed women’s softball games, football and basketball. He always enjoyed working with his hands creating furniture, metal work and gardens. After moving to Sun City Oro Valley he took a class in stained glass. It became a passion, and he created beautiful pieces for his home, family and friends and charitable causes. He became involved teaching for the Stained Glass Club, and guided beginners by answering questions, encouraging and assisting many students. He also learned to work with silver and created jewelry for the women in his family.
Dick and Carol enjoyed traveling in their retirement. Every year they traveled thousands of miles to visit their children, grandchildren and siblings. They enjoyed routes that had not been traveled before, with visits to national parks, museums and other places of interest. Their travels included Road Scholar trips, beach time in San Diego, mission trips to Africa and Mexico, visits to Alaska, a river cruise in Europe and a Mediterranean cruise this past August. Dick enjoyed music from jazz to country to classical. He was a man of deep faith, an encourager and an optimist, a person of integrity, and he had a great sense of humor. He embraced life enthusiastically. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His motto in life was “never give up.” He lived his life fully and joyfully.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Donna Lee. He is survived by his sister Lyola (Earl) Logterman; uncle Dick Dirksen; his wife Carol; children Debra (Maynard) Vaughn, Linda Goeman, Ellen (Joe) Blaz and Richard, Jr.; step-children Phil (Verona) Drenckpohl, Mike Drenckpohl, Doug Drenckpohl, Danielle Dubow and Julie Green; grandchildren Jacqui Vaughn, Derek Vaughn, Erin (Ben) Klinkner, Kristina, Kaitlyn, Eric, Phoebe, Brad and Max Drenckpohl; great-grandchildren Braeden, Kayley and Emma Vaughn, and Jack Klinkner; and sisters and brothers-in-law Leona (Leo) Weinheimer, Bill Shook, Sam (Pat) Leinbach, Bruce (Susie) Leinbach, and Joan (Jim) Carver.
