April 22, 1942 -- July 12, 2015

John Turner, 73, of Ames, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames with a visitation at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

John Orlando Turner was born April 22, 1942, to John O. Sr. and Ferne Marian (Manemann) Turner, in Fort Dodge. John grew up in the Dumont and Hanlontown area and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1960. He graduated from Eagle Grove Junior College in 1962, and then Buena Vista College in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in business management. John's career was in a variety of accounting functions, starting at I-35 Truck Stop, Rodgers Truck Line, Giese Construction and then finishing the last 14 years of his career at Youth and Shelter Services in Ames.

John's hobbies included photography competitions, raising and competitively showing purebred bantam chickens, going to art and craft shows, and spending time with friends and family.

John is survived by his daughter, Nicole (Mark) Phillips, of Sterling, Va.; two granddaughters, Fleur Phillips and Liezel Phillips, also of Sterling; one sister, Gerri Geitz, of Williams; two nephews, Ed Geitz, of Iowa Falls, and Rick Geitz, of McLean, Ill.; one niece, Deann Geistler, of Norwalk; his dear friend, Mark Evans, of Des Moines; and his friends and work family at Youth and Shelter Services. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be designated to Youth and Shelter Services. Adams Funeral Home in Ames is assisting the family with arrangements.
