James Kenneth Smith, was born March 12, 1937, in Forest City, IA, the son of Charles Marvis and Bertha A. (Hanna) Smith. He attended Clear Lake Schools and graduated from Clear Lake High School with the Class of 1956. Following high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he trained as an airplane mechanic. His military tenure was from October 1956 to October 1960. After his honorable discharge from the service Jack worked in construction, then as an agricultural mechanic for various implement dealers in the Garner, IA, area for many years. Jack could often be found tinkering on various projects in his garage. He worked at Stellar Industries, Inc. in Garner for a few years until he "retired". Unwilling to not stay active in the work force, Jack, worked as a safety guard at CF Industries for the last 15 years of his life, only recently quitting due to ill health. On June 16, 1972, he married Marlene F. Linahon. This union was blessed with two daughters, Christina and Teri. After some moving around the family settled in Klemme in 1977. Jack enjoyed mechanics and could fix most things with his ingenuity. He would often take manufactured items and fabricate them to meet his own specification and functionality. He enjoyed traveling and his children reflect with fondness on countless and often adventure filled trips through nearly all corners of the U.S.. He and Marlene continued to take off on spur of the moment excursions after the girls grew up many times just choosing a destination out of the blue. Jack looked forward to times spent with family and friends, gospel music, and chatting over a cup of coffee. He had a great fondness for dogs. He loved times in the outdoors exploring the wonders of nature and wildlife. He loved hotrods and power cars. Favorite past times included camping adventures, shooting, fishing, teaching his family to drive manual cars, and working with his wife and daughters honing their valve grinding skills and other engine work. He was a member of the Agape Church and National Rifle Association.

Jack is survived by his wife of almost 43 years, Marlene Smith, 314 East State Street, Klemme, IA, 50449; daughters, Christina (Ryan) Meyer, Goodell, IA, Teri Ziegler and significant other, Travis Trampel, Klemme, IA; and two grandchildren, Dakota and Briley, also many nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bertha Smith. Four sisters and four brothers-in-law: June (Luther) Smith, Maxine and Lyle Kapka, Shirley and Hans Teigen, Jerry Linahon. Mother-in-law, Fern Linahon and father-in-law, W. Dale Linahon.
