Merl Jerald Askvig, the son of Tilliam and Rose (Borel) Askvig, was born on August 12, 1923, north of Goldfield, Iowa. He attended country school and in Goldfield, but he quit school and went to work for area farmers and helped his mother farm after his dad was burnt and died. He learned the trade of buying and selling livestock from Calla Tank from Renwick. In November of 1948, Merl was united in marriage with Beverly Thorn of Eagle Grove. The couple made their home in Goldfield until moving to Eagle Grove in 2010. Merl worked for Supreme Bread on a country route and Whyte’s Hardware as a salesman. He then went back into livestock business and also worked for Moorman’s Feed selling feed for livestock until his retirement. Merl enjoyed his trips to Montana and Wyoming, wildlife, gardening and playing with his grandchildren.

Merl passed away Monday, May 11, 2015, at Rotary Senior Living, at the age of 91 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim, Harry and Harold; sisters, Ida Nelson and Vera Bell Askvig and son, Dennis Askvig. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Askvig of Eagle Grove; children: Jerry Askvig (Linda) of Creston, Merl Jr. (Robbie) of Lebanon, TN, Charles Askvig (Cathy) of Eagle Grove, Duane Askvig (Cindy) of Clarion, Linda Lumpkin of Mathis, TX and Jeannie Chapman of Fort Dodge; 13 grandchildren: Tracy Crees (Brad), Eddie Askvig (Brandy), Jake Askvig, Scott Jensen (Kelly), Joe Askvig (Lena), Josh Askvig (Nicole), Jessie Askvig, Chad Askvig, Steven Peske, Stephanie Hughes (Chris), Tiffany Kanehl (Johnny), Blake Chapman and Brock Chapman; several step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; siblings: Richard Askvig (Mary), Ardith Holtan (Mel), Darlene Kastler (Larry), Doris Mayes (Bob) and sisters-in-law, Elinor Askvig, Bernice Askvig and Virginia Anderson.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2015, from 5 to 7 pm at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Graveside services will be held Friday at 1:00 pm at Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
