DES MOINES, IA - James O. Tokheim was born Oct. 28, 1924 in Oak Park, Ill. Soon after the family relocated to Maynard, Iowa where Jim graduated high school in 1941. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from December 1941 until February 1946 attaining the ultimate rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon returning from his tour of duty with the military, Jim graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska.
On Jan. 1, 1953, Jim married Marian Harrington, in Bucklin, Mo. Jim and Marian were blessed with three children, Rodney James, born in 1955, Susan Dee, born in 1958 and Alan Paul, born in 1960. Jim had a long rewarding career in the Insurance Industry taking him and the family to several cities within the Midwest including; Kansas City, Mo., Fayette, Lincoln, Neb., Peoria, Ill., and Downers Grove, Ill. Jim's career finally brought the family to DeWitt, where all three children graduated high school. Jim finished his career as an Assistant Vice President at Iowa Mutual Insurance Company in DeWitt, retiring in 1988. Jim and Marian enjoyed many years of retirement returning to Kansas City, Mo. In 1996 they relocated to Strawberry Point to spend some time closer to the grandchildren. In 2004 they once again relocated to Des Moines to enjoy their youngest grandchildren.Jim died May 6, 2015 after a brief stay in the hospital. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Jeannette and Ole Tokheim of Oelwein, and sister, Juanita Hultquist of Denver, Colo. He is survived by his wife Marian; son Rod and wife Deb Tokheim of Clinton; daughter Sue and husband Joe Cahill of Austin, Texas and son Al and wife Leah Tokheim of Johnston; grandchildren, Branden, Collin, Christian, Michelle, Ben, Davis and great grandson Parker.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 11, at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, followed by a funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday at East Ullensvang Cemetery, Thor, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Urbandale, or The Gardens at Luther Park in Des Moines. Iles Funeral Home - Westover Chapel - Des Moines, IA
