Rev. Ernest H. Lauer, 96, of Lincoln, passed away Sept. 6, 2014 in Lincoln. Born April 5, 1918 Elmo, Kan. to Wilhelm and Elsie (Allen) Lauer. Ernest graduated from Lakeland College in Plymouth, Wis., 1944. Entered Mission House Seminary at the same location and graduated 1947. He was ordained into the Christian Ministry by the Kansas City Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church in his home church, Bethany Evangelical and Reformed Church, Elmo, Kan. at which he served until 1951.
He served Trinity Church, Hudson, Kan. 1951-56, Immanuel E&R United Church of Christ, Klemme, Iowa 1957-63, First United Church of Christ, Tipton, Iowa 1963-74, and Zion United Church of Christ, Lincoln, 1974-83 when he retired from active ministry. After retiring he served Zion Church, Falls City, and Faith Church, Lincoln, 1989-98 in an interim capacity. During his active ministry he served in various capacities in the wider work of the Church including secretary of the Kansas City Synod, Iowa, and Nebraska conferences. He also served on various committees and boards of the Church on the Association and National level.
An avid sports fan, Ernest was a respected football and basketball player in college and is recognized in the Lakeland College Athletics Hall of Fame. Ernest enjoyed family vacations at Rice Lake, Wis. and spent hours fishing, swimming, and water skiing with his family. He recorded these vacations and others with slide shows of his photos which were viewed with delight and amusement throughout the years. Fascinated by technology, he embraced the computer with enthusiasm into his daily life even in his advanced years.
Married 61 years and preceded in death by his wife, Julia Ida (Schmid); son, William G.; brothers, Orville, Leo, Dean, Dale, Allen; sisters, Esther(Barnes) and Irene (Douglas). He is survived by sons, Ernest J., David A., Richard M., Noel T.; daughter, Julia A. Lauer-Cheenne; sister, Ruby (Halsey); seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Sunday 9-9 & with family 6-8 p.m. at Butherus, Maser, & Love, 4040 'A' Street; Monday 1-2 at church. Funeral service: 2 p.m. on Monday (9/15) at First-Plymouth Church, 20th & 'D' St., Lincoln. Burial will be held in Wyuka Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Memorials to Lakeland College, Annual Fund for Excellence, PO Box 359, Sheboygan, WI 53082-0359. Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
