WAS JUST 18 YEARS OLD AND A HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE - LEAVES PARENTS AND THREE BROTHERS

Jack McCarthy passed away at 1:30 Sunday morning at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, following a lingering illness. He was taken ill last spring and throughout the summer, he made a number of trips to Rochester for treatment. In September he returned to Rochester in hopes that through medical science his life might be spared and remained there until the end came. His father and mother were with him much of the time at various intervals at the hospital and for the past two months his mother was with him constantly. Even through Jack suffered much he never gave up hope and almost up to the last his belief was that he would finally overcome his ailment and be able to return home. During the past two months he suffered many serious attacks from which he rallied but he grew weaker gradually and death relieved him of his suffering early Sunday morning. The body, accompanied by his mother, arrived at Alton by train Sunday evening and was brought here overland.

Requiem High Mass was held at St. Mary’s Church in this city at 9 o’clock Tuesday morning, Reverend A. J. Lynott of Vail, Iowa, an uncle of the deceased, reading the Mass. He was assisted by Reverend Father J. M. Neppel of Hawarden and Reverend Father J. A. Roder of Akron. The pall bearers were James McCarthy, Millard Troxell, John McNally Jr., Joseph Koob, Lawrence Muth and Lloyd Keehn. Interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery in this city.

John Joseph McCarthy, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John McCarthy of Hawarden, was born at Eagle Grove, December 3, 1917, so he had just passed his 18th birthday. He came to Hawarden with his parents when a boy and so practically all of his life was spent here. He attended St. Mary’s School in this city, completing the first eight grades in this school after which he entered the Hawarden High School from which he was graduated last spring. While in high school he took an active part in athletics, participated in track and football. Jack possessed a quiet and unassuming disposition and was a favorite among his young friends. It seems unusually sad that he should be called just as he was about to step out on the threshold of life which seemed to have so much in store for him. Sincere sympathy is extended to the members of his family in their bereavement.

He is survived by his parents and three brothers, Edward, James and William. He also leaves his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lynott. Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Lynott, Pierre, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. James Gehan and two daughters, Rock Rapids; Martin Daley and William McCarthy, Council Bluffs; and Reverend Father A. J. Lynott, Vail, Iowa.
