Shirley Mae Boelman, age 88, of Ackley, Iowa, formerly of Aplington, Iowa, was the born September 30, 1924, the daughter of Henry and Mary Jane (Hawe) Glade in Dows, Iowa. Shirley graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1941. After receiving her teaching certificate, Shirley taught the second grade at the Aplington Elementary School. On January 30, 1952, Shirley was united in marriage with Folkert Boelman at her parent’s home. After their marriage, Shirley discontinued teaching to raise their family. When her children were in school, she went back to teaching special reading classes at the Aplington School. Shirley retired in 1989. Shirley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was very active. She was an elder, taught Sunday School, and a member of the Women’s Circle. Shirley enjoyed reading, baking and quilting. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

Shirley passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her husband, Folkert on April 12, 1977; an infant son, Curtis Boelman; her parents; her son-in-law, Preston Groote in May 2002. Shirley is survived by two sons, Jim (Ilene) Boelman of Cedar Falls and Jack (Cheri) Boelman of Ackley; one daughter, Mary (Scott) Groote Diaz of Arvada, Colorado; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington with burial at Pleasant View Cemetery in Aplington. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, Iowa and one hour prior to services. Memorials may be directed to the Aplington Elementary School Library. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington is in charge of arrangements.
