September 18, 1930 --- October 11, 2014

U.S. Veteran Merle “Mike” Peterson, 84, of Alden, passed away on October 11, 2014 at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday October, 18, 2014 at the Alden Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Alden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.

Merle “Mike” Dean Peterson was born on September 18, 1930 on the farm near Popejoy, Iowa; the son of Oscar and May (Donnelson) Peterson. He attended the Oakland Valley #8 School and graduated from the Popejoy High School in 1947. He worked for Ackerman’s in Popejoy until he was called into service in 1951 for the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Fuller at the Popejoy Methodist Church, September 4, 1951. After returning home from service in April 1953, the couple made their home in rural Alden where they farmed. To this union, two sons were born: Jess and Dean. Mike was a member of the Alden United Methodist Church. He helped on many areas in the church over the years.

Survivors include his wife Beverly of Iowa Falls, two sons Jess Peterson and his wife Terri of Alden and Dean Peterson and his wife Carol of St. Johns, MI; seven grandchildren Jill, Lisa and Jamie Peterson of Alden; Joseph, Katelyn, Steven and Jenna Peterson of St. Johns, MI; one sister Karen Classon and her husband Gary of Hiawatha and one sister-in-law Dottie Peterson of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nellie White, his brother James Peterson, his brother-in-law Max White and other relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank everyone for their many acts of kindness and expressions of sympathy shown to them. A time of fellowship with the family will be held at the Alden United Methodist Church after the cemetery services. Everyone is invited to attend.
