PLAN RITES TO HONOR ‘CHUTIST
Services for B. Shake Will Be Held Sunday

Clarion - Memorial services will be held at the First Congregational church at 3 p.m. Sunday for Sgt. Bernard Shake, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Shake of Clarion. The Rev. Ralph J. Beebe, with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion participating, will officiate. Sgt. Shake was born Aug. 10, 1919, and was graduated from Clarion high school in 1936. During his years in high school he was active in athletics and was a member of the Cowboy wrestling team. Following his graduation he was employed for a time in local grocery stores, and after attending a meat cutter's school was employed at the Bowen & Gruppe store in Lake Mills and stores in Waterloo, Fort Dodge and Webster City. He enlisted from Webster City April 30, 1942, and obtained his first military training at Wolters, Texas, where he was promoted to corporal and later transferred to Fort Benning, Ga., and Alliance Nebr. Here he volunteered and qualified as a paratrooper in the 507th paratroop infantry and was again promoted, receiving the rank of Sergeant. After qualifying as a paratrooper he was transferred to England November, 1943, and took part in the invasion of Normandy and was killed in action in France, June 22, 1944. Besides his parents he is survived by one sister, Mrs. John Strever of Clarion.

Plan Military Rites for Hero
Clarion Paratrooper to Be Buried Saturday

Clarion - Military services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Eyler funeral home for Sgt. Bernard Shake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman G. Shake, of Clarion. The Rev. William B. Gamble, pastor of the United Presbyterian church will officiate. Sgt. Shake enlisted in the paratroopers in April 1942, and entered Camp Wolters, Texas, for training. He was a member of the 507 parachute infantry and was killed in Normandy June 22, 1944. Besides his parents he is survived by one sister, Mrs. John Strever, of Clarion. Burial will be in the Clarion Evergreen cemetery.
