Fire Fatality in Steamboat Rock

A well-known long-time Steamboat Rock man apparently died in a house fire early Friday morning in that community. Authorities were called around 3 a.m. and were still cleaning up about six hours later at press time, but initial reports were that 77 year old Herb Hackbarth lost his life due to the fire. The state fire marshals office was sending an investigator, customary in fire fatalities. Local firemen couldn’t speculate on the cause of the blaze. Mr. Hackbarth reportedly lived alone in the home at the time. Firemen from Eldora and Ackley joined the Steamboat Rock department in answering the call. More details were expected this week.
