Leonard Melvin Berg of Monmouth [Oregon] died on Jan. 7. He was 88. He was born to Nels and Dorothea Lundmark Berg in Clarion, Iowa. He married Mildred Olson on May 29, 1937 in Alexander, Minn., she died on Sept. 20, 1984. He later married Barbara Gilmore on July 15, 1989 in Monmouth.
He was a farmer who moved to Oregon in 1944 where he worked in the shipyards in Portland. He lived a short time in Pendleton and then moved to Dallas in 1947 where he worked for Willamette Industries Sawmill loading boxcars. He later operated a saw in the plywood mill. He and Mildred owned and operated Berg's Tropical Fish Store in Dallas. He retired from there in 1984. He was a 50 year member of the local sawmill union and a member of the Dallas Area Seniors and the Monmouth First Christian Church. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, pinochle and collecting John Deere tractor replicas.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Berg of Monmouth; sons, Donald Berg of Independence, Duane Berg of LaGrande and Melvin Berg of Sacramento, Calif.; daughters, Diane Schmidt of Salem, Katherine Mackey of Portland; and Marilyn Grim of Farmington, Mich.; stepsons, Larry Gilmore of Salem, Gary Gilmore of Las Vegas, Nev., and Terry Gilmore of Seaside; brothers, Marten Berg of Webster, S.D., Salmer Berg and David Berg, both of Osakis, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were Jan. 10 at Monmouth First Christian Church and entombment was at Restlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to the church building fund or to your favorite charity in care of Bollman Funeral Home in Dallas which handled in the arrangements.
