Betty J. Lenning, 89, of Humboldt, passed away January 19, 2013 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.

Betty is survived by her husband, James Lenning of Humboldt; her son, Larry (Marcia) Lenning of Humboldt; her foster daughter, Karen (Denny) Clark of Bethpage, Tennessee; grandchildren, Brenda (Jerry) Kramer, Aaron (Diane) Lenning, and Jarod Lenning, Francine (Zac) Ramerez, Jennifer (Kyle) Rodriguez; great grandchildren, Brittny and Megan Kramer, Jacob and Christopher Lenning, Utahna (Billy) Brown, Jacqueline and David Ramerez, Nicole, Kylee and Gavin Rodriguez; and great-great grandchild, Xavier Brown. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Ethel (Pullen) Gates and her two brothers, Jerry and Donald Gates.

Betty June Gates, the daughter of Arthur and Ethel (Pullen) Gates, was born April 19, 1923 at Central City, Nebraska. She graduated from high school at Clarks, Nebraska and joined the family who had moved to Humboldt County, Iowa. She was united in marriage to James Lenning on December 4, 1941 and the couple made their home in Humboldt County. They farmed in the Bode and Ottosen area before moving to Beaver Township where Betty was active in the farming operations. She also worked for DeKalb Seed Corn during the harvest months. Betty was active on the Humboldt County Fair Board especially with the Horticulture exhibit. She enjoyed bowling, golf, her garden and canning. She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ where she was active in circle and served as a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Beaver Ladies Club. She enjoyed the many winters she and Jim spent in Mission, Texas and especially loved her grandchildren. Betty became a resident of the Humboldt Care Center North in August of last year. She passed away there on January 19, 2013 at the age of 89.
