Vance Kenton Paulson, age 79, passed away at Meadowood Nursing Facility in Stockton, California on Thursday, September 11, 2014 after a valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born November 24, 1934, in Forest City Iowa, he lived in Dows, Iowa before college and held numerous teaching positions in Iowa prior to moving to Stockton, California in 1958. He worked for the Stockton Unified School District for 41 years, most of which was at Franklin High School as a guidance counselor before retiring in 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alyce Louise Paulson, and sons Scot Kenton Paulson and Bradley Kirk Paulson, both of Seattle, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents Verner and Hazel Paulson of Stockton, California, and granddaughter Sarah Anne. Surviving grandchildren are Meredith Mackenzie, Reid Kenton, and Michelle Lynne.

Vance graduated from high school in Dows, Iowa, from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in Education, and completed his graduate studies at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He was an active, longtime member at St. Andrews Lutheran Church. Following retirement, he was a frequent volunteer at St. Mary’s Dining Room and at the Troke Library. Vance was an active athlete and avid sports fan, who also coached athletics throughout his teaching career. Vance and Alyce also traveled extensively, both internationally and throughout the United States. As a loving and caring husband and father, Vance’s easy going demeanor and quick wit was loved by his family and close friends alike. Memorial contributions are welcome and have been established at St. Andrews Lutheran Church and for the Parkinson’s Support Group, 808 Maplewood Drive, Lodi, California 95242.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 27th at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 4910 Claremont Drive, Stockton, California. Relatives and friends are welcome at the service and at the reception in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. Interment will be held privately at the Cherokee Memorial Park.
