John Speich Died Friday Following Second Stroke

John Speich, a resident of the community for the past sixty-eight years, passed away at his home in Renwick last Friday. His illness was short and he had been in good health to within a few days of his death. He suffered a stroke of paralysis on Monday, June 11; and was apparently slowly recovering until Friday when he was stricken with another stroke and died shortly after.

John Speich was born October 10, 1864 in Switzerland, and died June 16, 1934 at the age of 70 years, 8 months and 5 days. When about a year and a half old he came with his parents to America and they settled in Wisconsin, moving to Iowa about a year later and locating on a farm northwest of Renwick. He enjoyed the privileges of the public school and also the Sunday school and church services, which were held in the Speich home on the farm for along time. The family retired from the farm and moved into Renwick in 1902, building their present home where the deceased resided until death. Mr. Speich was of a reserved nature and loved to be alone and in the quietness of the family circle. He never married.

He is survived by his stepmother, Mrs. Fred Speich, three sisters, Mrs. S. B. Hefty and Mrs. Lena Liscum of Renwick, and Mrs. Rudy Freitag of Monticello, Wis., three half sisters, Mrs. Fannie DeMoy, Mrs. Celia Wigan and Mary Speich, and one half brother, Antone Speich, of Renwick. His father and mother, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Evangelical church, the pastor, Rev. Laurence Sohl, preaching the sermon. Burial was made in the Baumgartner cemetery. Among the relatives from a distance who were here for the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Freitag and Miss. Pauline Babler of Montiello, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Jake Freitag of Madison, Wis., J. H. Speich and Vernon Byork of St. Paul, Minn.
