January 23, 1943 ---- June 23, 2014

Roxana Kauffman, 71, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, died on Monday, June 23, 2014, after a long struggle with cancer. Roxana Wohlwend Schwaigert Kauffman was born on January 23, 1943, the daughter of Edward “Baltz” and Ruth (Crabtree) Wohlwend in Fort Dodge. She grew up in the Thor-Eagle Grove area, but also spent time with her Aunt Violet and Uncle Roy Grabe, and graduated from Eagle Grove High School. Her siblings included Bruce Wohlwend, Nancy Cothran, and Ruth Wohlwend-Lloyd.

On January 4, 1964, Roxana married Thomas Francis Schwaigert at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, and moved around Iowa, settling in the communities of West Bend, Harlan, and Independence. To this union were born three children: Marcia (Kevin) Powell, of rural Strawberry Point, Lisa Newman of Edgewood, and Edward (Mary) Schwaigert, of Aurora, Colorado. She has 11 grandchildren (Zach and Crystal Schwaigert, Levi Newman, Megan Chambers, Gabby Lucas, Kelsi Newman, Hannah, Glyn, Thomas, Maire, and Celia Powell), 5 great-grandchildren (Levi-3, Zach 1, and Megan-1). Her first husband, Thomas preceded her in death on June 1, 2001.

On December 27, 2003, Roxana married George Joseph Kauffman in Maynard, and they lived in Strawberry Point. Roxie enjoyed spending time with George’s family and children, including George (Kathy) Kauffman, Laurel, Montana, Teresa (Kevin) Iovino, Pattersonville, New York, Sheral Bark, Waukon, Tom (Heather) Kauffman, Oelwein, and Ashley (Justin) Robare, Chicago, Illinois, and the family and grandchildren on that side.

Roxie’s life is personified in her generous spirit and her ability to listen and accept others unconditionally. She found great joy in sitting and listening to others, talking with friends, baking, and playing cards and computer games, but also liked rummaging in second-hand stores, reading, and spending time with others.

Roxie was preceded in death by her first husband; a brother; and her parents. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you plant a flowering fruit tree or shrub in her memory.
