Roger George Mathias, 77, went to be with our Lord, May 16th, 2014, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. Roger was born on February 16th, 1937, in Wright County, Iowa, to George and Alice (Hoverstein) Mathias. The family moved to Indianola, Iowa, when Roger was a child. He graduated from Indianola High School, enlisted in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1962. Roger returned to Indianola, entering Simpson College, and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. On July 28, 1962, he married Sharon Hickman. To this marriage were born three sons and one daughter. While teaching in the Atlantic School system, he attended Northwest Missouri State University and received a Masters Degree in Education. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and running his dogs. Roger was a wonderful loving father and grandfather and will be missed by all of his family and friends.

Roger is survived by his wife, Sharon; his children, Alex and wife, Amy of Brayton, Iowa, Julie of Clive, Iowa, Steve of Atlantic, Iowa and Mark and wife, Constance of Iowa City, Iowa; one grandson and four granddaughters — Ben Mathias, currently serving in the US Air Force in Japan, Alexis and Madisen Pautvein of Clive, Savannah and Adrian Mathias of Iowa City; sisters, Sharon Hulen and husband, Bill of Indianola, Iowa, Diane Potter of Waterloo, Iowa, and Deb Benson and husband Bob, of Indianola, Iowa; brother, Ron Mathias and wife, Carolyn of Walnut Creek, California; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, with Pastor Ken Davidson, officiating. The family will greet friends at 9:30 a.m., until the time of service, on Wednesday, in the Parish Center at Zion Lutheran Church. Following the interment at the Atlantic Cemetery, all are invited to return to a luncheon in the Fellowship Hall at Zion. Military rites will be performed at the cemetery by the Atlantic Color Guard. Roland Funeral Service of Atlantic, Iowa is caring for Roger's family and his arrangements.
