Dolliver -- Word was received here Sunday of the death of Miss Hattie Poffenberger, who passed away at the Oakdale Sanitarium Saturday. The body was brought to Dolliver Monday forenoon and funeral services were held at 2 o’clock. Interment was made in Dolliver cemetery beside that of her mother and father.
Hattie Poffenberger, daughter of Coyle and Anna Dora Poffenberger was born July 18, 1901 at Goldfield, Ia., and died Sept. 11, 1937 at Oakdale Sanitarium. Miss Poffenberger attended the grade schools at Webster City, high school at Blairsburg, Ia., and also attended college at Des Moines and Cedar Falls. She taught in the grade schools at Cameron, Melbourne, Strawberry Point and Estherville. She was teaching at the latter place when she was attacked with influenza in the spring of 1933, two months before school was out. Pneumonia followed the flu and she was taken to Rochester, Minn., for examination and spent the summer with a friend near Osage, Ia. In the fall she returned to Estherville but found she was unable to teach and was taken to the Birney hospital where she was for a while. Then she came to the home of her father in Dolliver and the 4th of November she entered the sanitarium at Oakdale for tuberculosis, where she kept very quiet flat on her back for over two years, not even allowed to whisper. In July, 1935 she was taken to Iowa City where she underwent a therocaplasty after which she gained rapidly and was able to talk and walk some but about a week ago she began to have hemorrhages of the lungs and another followed on Saturday morning from which she passed away. Her father and mother have both preceded her in death. She leaves one brother, Harry Poffenberger, who is a coach in the West Bend schools the past three years. Besides two uncles and an aunt and other relatives who mourn her passing. Hattie was a member of the Methodist church at Webster City. She has a host of friends in Estherville and Dolliver who extend sympathy to the relatives. Those who attended the funeral from away were Mrs. Wm. Munroe of Chicago, Ill., Mr. Wm. Kobern [Koberg] and son, Howard and wife of Good Thunder, Minn.; Mrs. L. Hulsebus and the minister and wife of Meservey, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Seifert of Charter Oak, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. B. F. McFarland, Mrs. A. R. McMullen and Miss Mable Dinsmore of West Bend; Miss Marie Sorenson, Mrs. L. J. Calvin and Mary Poffenberger of Estherville; Mrs. Otto Eiselt and son Floyd and two friends whose names we did [not] learn from Blue Earth, Minn.
