Dr. Charles Hawkins
Clarion, IA. – Dr. Charles P. Hawkins, 61, who practiced medicine here for 30 years, died Thursday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of a heart ailment. He was one of the nation’s leaders in creating a separate medical specialty for family physicians.
Dr. Hawkins was a charter member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a past president of the Iowa academy of Family Physicians and a diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice. He was a past president of the Wright County Medical Society and a delegate to the Iowa Medical Society’s annual meeting.
He was president of Blue Shield of Iowa in 1964, signing the first contract with federal officials to designate Blue Shield as the Medicare carrier in Iowa. Dr. Hawkins received his bachelor’s and medical degrees at Marquette University and interned at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane; four daughters, Mary Patricia Busick of Guttenberg, Margaret Hawkins of Evanston, Ill., Linda Heck of Urbandale and Anne Hawkins, at home; five sons, Michael of Hoffman Estates, Ill., Charles of Des Moines, Daniel of Humboldt, Peter of Huxley and Joseph of Iowa City; seven grandchildren, and three brothers.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Clarion, with burial in the Catholic cemetery there. Eyler-Willim Funeral Home in Clarion is in charge of arrangements. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa, 26 June 1981.
