April 2, 1915 --- May 3, 2014

Maxine Benson, 99, of Clarion passed away May 3, 2014, at Iowa Specialty Hospital of Belmond. Memorial services for Maxine Benson will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at the Clarion Church of Christ, 420 North Main Street, in Clarion with Pastor Bob Dishman officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the services at the church.

Maxine Benson, the daughter of Edgar Sherman Brooks and Hazel (Whipple) Brooks was born April 2, 1915, on a farm near Lake Cornelia. She was educated in Grant Township rural schools and was a graduate of Clarion High School and Iowa Central Community College. She taught rural school in Wright County for several years. On June 29, 1936, she was married to Earl William Benson and they made their home in Clarion where her husband was employed by the Chicago Great Western Railroad. They were the parents of one son, Richard Earl Benson. During her married years she often substituted in rural schools and did some teaching at C.C.C. Camp in Clarion.

After the death of her husband in 1966, she was then employed by Hagie Manufacturing Company. She worked there until her retirement. Maxine enjoyed music, reading, playing bridge and genealogy. She especially enjoyed her three great-granddaughters. She was a member of Clarion Church of Christ, Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Maxine is survived by her son, Richard (Rita) Benson of Glenwood, MN; grandsons, Todd Benson of Westminister, CO and John (Roni) Benson of West Des Moines; great-granddaughters, Jessie Jo, Samantha Jo and Logan Lea all of West Des Moines; brothers, Roger (Sunnie) Brooks of Des Moines and Alan (Chris) Brooks of Auburn, CA; sister, Joan (Dean) Schroeder of Clarion; sisters-in-law, Ramona Brooks, Donna Brooks, Verla Brooks, and Marcia Fisher; many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; brothers, Robert Brooks, James Brooks, William Brooks, John “Jack” Brooks and sisters, Charline Weiber, Patricia Hutchison and Betty Robinson.
