Alden Matthew Chamberlin, the son of John Greene and Mary Belle (Berrier) Chamberlin, was born March 10, 1922, in Humboldt, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Humboldt High School in 1939. He then attended the University of South Dakota for one year and Iowa State University, graduating in 1948, majoring in Agronomy. Al was drafted into the United States Army, serving from February 2, 1943 until his honorable discharge on February 24, 1946. Al was united in marriage to Opal Rutherford in 1952 at the Monroe United Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Monroe until 2014 when they moved to Webster City.Al started working for as a sales manager for Pfister Associated Growers (PAG) in 1948, then for W.R. Grace & Company and Cargill, retiring in 1979 at the age of 55 years. He worked 16 years more years for the City Of Monroe doing clerical work. Al was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church since 1948, serving in the Men's Club and as a Sunday school teacher for 50 years. He was a 60 year member of the Fred Sladen American Legion Post #363 in Monroe and Kiwanis. Al enjoyed gardening, fishing, bird watching and crossword puzzles. He was an avid reader, loved westerns and big sports fan –Iowa State and the Cubs!
Al passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2013, at Windsor Manor Assisted Living in Webster City, Iowa at the age of 92 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Grace, Greta, Joe and John Chamberlin, Jean Andersen and Marjorie Whittaker. Survivors include his wife, Opal Chamberlin of Webster City; children: Sherri Loots and partner Greg Krajewski of Stanton, IL, Joe Chamberlin and wife Kay of Eagle Grove and Merri Cory and husband David of Altoona; six grandchildren: Ryan, Brent and Kerri Chamberlin, Jayson and Lucas Loots and Collin Cory; two great-grandsons, Grayson and Owen and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 19, 2014, 10:30 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church with Pastor Stephen Taylor officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:00 am until service time at the church. Burial will be in Silent City Cemetery, Monroe. Memorials may be left to the Monroe Library, Monroe United Methodist Church or the families discretion.
