May 7, 1877 --- August 17, 1906

Lon Smith was ground to pieces this Friday afternoon at one o'clock by the south bound freight at Hospers. He attempted to jump a box car from the platform and was flung under the wheels. His head and legs and arms were cut off and his body mangled in terrible shape. Deceased was about thirty two years old. His folks live at Whiting. He has a wife somewhere and a child aged seven in Oklahoma with it's uncle. Smith was formerly a brakeman on the Northwestern through Alton and lived at Eagle Grove. He came to Hospers from Sheldon a few months ago and worked at blacksmithing.
