December 5, 1924 --- January 17, 2014

Shirley Messenger, 89, passed away on January 17, 2014. She was born to Anna and Walter Genereux on December 5, 1924, in Atlantic City, Iowa. Because her father was employed in the newspaper business, Shirley moved many times in her childhood. She lived in Schuyler, Neb., Manilla and Walcott, Iowa, and Valparaiso, Ind. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Michigan City, Ind., in 1942. After graduation, Shirley was employed for several years by the advertising agency of Allen & Reynolds in Omaha, Neb.

On October 22, 1949, Shirley married Howard Thomas "Bud" Messenger and they moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa. Bud was a self-employed professional photographer, a skill he learned in the Navy while serving in WW II. She supported him in his business, while raising three children. Shirley was known by her quick wit and no-nonsense attitude, and always wished the best for others. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Stan and Jerry; as well as her sons, Mike and Mark. She is survived by her daughter, Ann and husband, Tim McCormick, of St. Louis, Missouri. A memorial service was held in her remembrance at the Rotary Senior Living Chapel in the South Building, 620 SE 5th St., on Tuesday, January 21. Contributions may be made in Shirley’s name to Hospice for Wright County, 115 1st St. SE, Clarion, IA. Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
